Amaranth Days 2010 PDF Print E-mail

In October, Puente targets World Food Day to highlight our work in three regions in the southern state of Oaxaca. Together with local participants, we organize Amaranth Day events. In 2010, we were pleasantly surprised to gather two hundred people per event to exchange experiences about the production and consumption of amaranth, to demonstrate to fellow villagers the work accomplished during the year and to celebrate achievements.

In the Mixteca, San Cristobal Amoltepec had the honor of receiving Mr. Guillermo Rishchynski, Ambassador of Canada as well as Jesus Leon Santos, winner of the prestigious Goldman Prize for the Environment. Mr. Santos gave a speech saying that, “to achieve food sovereignty implies producing high quality foods that are healthy and are appropriate to the dietary culture of each region.”
In the Central Valleys the day was animated by delicious amaranth based food, a display of traditional dances, a speech by University of Chapingo Professor Gabriel Narváez about “healthy, sustainable living”, educational activities for kids and a demonstration of the new threshing machine.

The event due to take place in Santa Maria Tlahuitoltepec was cancelled due to the tragedy that occurred there two weeks previously. Funds intended for the event were redirected towards the provision of emergency health services for the population.
